How it works
How Ferna works.
A short walk through what you can do. You can skim it or skip it. For why it exists, read about the project.
One screen
Ferna is a single screen: a running, notes-style list of the day you're looking at. Up top sits a small total card; below it, the entries you've jotted. Swipe between days, or tap the date to jump to one.
There are no categories to set up and no account to make. Everything lives on your phone.
Jotting an expense
Type an entry the way you'd say it: coffee 5, groceries 42.10, got paid 2400. Ferna reads the line and pulls out the amount, and whether it's money out or money in.
- No fixed format. Write a number, a note, or both.
- Ferna decides spending vs. income from what you wrote, and you can flip it with a tap.
No account to set up. Your entries are kept on your phone, and you can export them to CSV whenever you like.
Saying it out loud
Tap the mic and just say it: “lunch fourteen twenty”. Your words are turned into text, and the same parser logs the amount.
- Good for logging on the move, right after you've paid.
Scanning a receipt
Photograph a receipt and Ferna reads it: it pulls the text, finds the total, and you review it before it's logged.
- The receipt is just used to fill in the amount.
- You confirm the amount and note before it lands in the log.
Repeating payments
Rent, subscriptions, the gym: save them once as one-tap entries. Add them to today's log with a single tap, or give one a schedule so it's logged for you automatically.
- One tap logs a saved payment to the day you're on.
- Optional auto-log schedule for the bills that come like clockwork.
- Ferna can also spot a payment that repeats and offer to save it.
Totals & forecast
The total card keeps the running math so you don't have to. It shows what you've spent today and this month, what's left against a monthly budget you set, and a gentle projection of where the month is heading at your current pace.
- Today's total and the month's total, always in view.
- A budget cap with a progress bar and a soft nudge as you near it.
- Month-end forecast and a this-month-vs-last comparison.
No-spend days
Days where you spend nothing are quietly counted, and a little tree in the total card grows as they add up.
The daily nudge
Set a time and Ferna sends one local notification a day: log today's spending. Tap it and the add-entry sheet opens, ready for you to jot the day.
- One reminder, at a time you pick. Turn it off whenever.
- It's a normal phone notification, scheduled on your device.
Your data
When you want your numbers elsewhere, export everything to CSV from Settings, and import a CSV back in.
